How the calculator works

The maths is simple Google averages all star ratings linearly. This tool solves the reverse problem: given where you are today, exactly how many perfect reviews do you need?

Step 01

Enter your current stats

Add your total review count and current star average. Optionally enter your business name to personalise the results or sign in to auto-fill from your connected Google Business Profile.

Step 02

Pick your target rating

Choose from 4.0★ to 5.0★. The calculator instantly shows the exact number of 5-star reviews needed to reach it.

Step 03

See your timeline

Switch to the Timeline tab and drag the pace slider. The chart shows week-by-week how your rating climbs and when you'll hit your goal.

The formula

reviews_needed = ⌈ (target × count − current × count) ÷ (5 − target) ⌉

Where target and current are star averages, and count is your existing total review count. The ceiling function (⌈ ⌉) rounds up to the nearest whole review.

Frequently asked questions

How is a Google review rating calculated?

Google calculates your star rating by dividing the sum of all star ratings by the total number of reviews. For example, if you have 50 reviews totalling 220 stars, your average is 220 ÷ 50 = 4.4★.

How many 5-star reviews do I need to improve my Google rating?

It depends on your current count and average. The formula is: reviews needed = ⌈(target × count − current × count) ÷ (5 − target)⌉. Use the free calculator above to get your exact number instantly.

How long does it take to improve a Google review rating?

With a consistent review request strategy, most local businesses improve their rating by 0.2–0.5 stars within 4–8 weeks. The Timeline tab in the calculator shows your exact projection based on your chosen reviews-per-week pace.

What is a good Google review rating for a local business?

4.5★ or higher is considered excellent and drives strong click-through rates in Google Maps. 4.0–4.4★ is solid. Below 4.0★ can noticeably deter potential customers, particularly in competitive categories.

Can I remove bad Google reviews to improve my rating?

You can flag reviews that clearly violate Google's policies (spam, fake, off-topic) for removal. However, genuine negative reviews cannot be deleted. The most effective strategy is to collect more authentic 5-star reviews, which our calculator helps you plan.

Does responding to Google reviews affect my rating?

Responding to reviews doesn't directly change your star average, but it signals engagement to Google's algorithm and builds trust with potential customers making them more likely to choose you and leave their own review.
